VR in the 90s never worked because we didn't have good graphics cards to generate the high frame rate graphics required, or the high resolution screens for the headsets. So now the technology is much better and the prices have come down greatly. the prices are still quite high though and this will need to drop, but this is normal for new technology and will drop as more headsets come onto the market. I'm also looking forward to eye tracking being used to reduce the GPU overhead with foveated rendering and fake focal blur.
I've not tried the Oculus consumer version, only the DK1 on a bad PC and I've not tried the Vive either. the only good VR I've tried is playing VR Quake on my google cardboard headset using a headstrap and a cheap bluetooth gamepad. But that was great and makes me very excited to try the current vive or oculus headsets.
But it's likely that I will not buy a PC VR headset until the next generation in a few years time. What does everyone else here think?

I really for for VR to take-off in a serious manner. I think VR can change lives way beyond video games. In the future, VR may be as important as the Internet, a world you can escape into. I can't wait for those days to come! On a related note, we really should start learning Unreal Engine 4...
