What do people think is a good base level phone to aim a game at to ensure it runs well on everything. I use a Samsung Galaxy S5 as my main phone, but worry that it is too high performance wise compared to cheaper phones. Maybe something like a Moto G first generation, or something even less powerful?

Good question. I have a Moto G first gen as my main phone. It's a very good phone, and I'm thinking about buying a less powerfull phone to test in low end devices.

So almost any Libgdx (2d) game will run on those phones. if you start making low quality games only to let 2-3 users with a very old phone run your app, i dont think so... today a middle class phone (with android 5, quadcore processor, 1gb ram,..) cost about 150$ (or even less) so almost everyone THAT likes games get him a good smartphone. maybe few oldies stays with those old phones. i even would change the minSDK to android >4.4.4 or even >5.0 , you still will reach millions of users!

Good ideas Ilan. I think libgdx will run on all phones, I've tried it on an old galaxy s2 and has 500 sprites moving with no slow down, it's more whether my game code will slow things down. I suppose I could put some timing code in to see how much time the logic takes vs drawing the graphics.
